On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in mid November, Cajun Invasion and friends went for a leisurely paddle on beautiful Lake Martin.  As we paddled through cypress groves we spotted Great Blue Herons, White Herons, White Ibis and an Anhinga spreading it's wings to catch some of the dwindling sunlight.  There seemed to be more lotus and lily pads than last year and navigation got a little tricky.  The water level was down and we had a full boat making it even trickier.  We paddled past cypress knees, stumps, logs and other unknown obstacles below the water.  Then bump! We were stuck.  A lone nearby fisherman came to our aid but, his little boat against a 40ft.  dragon boat full of folks was not much help.  He left to get a bigger boat with none of us realizing the extent of our predicament.  Lucky for us, a group of paddlers from Pack & Paddle were also nearby and came to see if they could help out.  Some of us boarded their kayaks and canoes to help lighten the load in the Betty Ann.  That seemed to do the trick, and we stealthily made our way out into the open waters of the lake passing a few duck blinds complete with an array of decoys.  The sun was going down and a full moon was coming up showing itself in between clouds.  As we approached the landing, headlamps came on and some pesky mosquito's came out.  We quickly disembarked and hauled in the boat and thanked the folks from Pack & Paddle once again for their timely assistance.   As we were cleaning the boat and putting gear up, our steers person checked the hull.  Lo and behold, we had a hole in the outer fiberglass as big as a grapefruit.  We had been impaled, most likely  by a cypress crag.  Not the way we would have liked to end the season but;  looking on the bright side, no one fared any worse for this little adventure and it was our farewell paddle for the year.  The Betty Ann will have to spend a little time in surgery before being put up for the winter but;  she will be ready to go by next spring in time for our 2014 season.  Paddles UP!
